Chers amis bretons – de cœur ou d’adoption, nous souhaitons partager avec vous une trouvaille assez rare. Nous avions évoqué à travers ce blog, il y a quelques temps maintenant, le mouvement « Ar Seiz Breur« . Parmi les nombreuses réalisations de ce collectif, une revue bilingue français-breton nommée : Kornog – Occident. Revue illustrée des arts bretons. Dastumadenn skeudennek arzou kreiz. Notre série est exceptionnellement complète et en bon état, à feuilleter sans modération dans notre album !
Les Sept Frères
Le mouvement « Ar Seiz Breur » est né en 1923 suite à la rencontre de plusieurs artistes breton.ne.s partant d’un même constat : l’essoufflement du mouvement artistique breton. Ce dernier est alors figé depuis plusieurs siècles dans un art traditionnel éculé et se cantonne au pittoresque depuis l’arrivée du tourisme parisien en province. Ces différents artistes issus de tous les horizons possibles (arts plastiques, architecture, arts graphiques, arts décoratifs…), souhaitent alors insuffler un renouveau dans cet art issu de la riche tradition celtique.
Les figures de proue sont Jeanne Malivel, René-Yves et Suzanne Creston, Jakes Riou, Youenn Drezen, etc., mais en tout ce sont près de 60 artistes et intellectuels de tous bords qui gravitent pendant une vingtaine d’années autour des Seiz Breur. Pour l’anecdote, ce nom symbolique serait une référence à un conte gallo invoquant la protection des 7 saints fondateurs de la Bretagne.
Une Revue Éphémère
En 1928, les membres du Seiz Breur décident d’utiliser un nouveau médium pour propager leurs idéaux et réalisations : la revue Kornog. Plutôt que de paraphraser les intentions des fondateurs de la revue voici un extrait de leur profession de foi:
Kornog veut redonner à la Bretagne la phalange de peintres, de sculpteurs, de décorateurs, d’architectes, de tailleurs d’images, de musiciens, d’artisans qui lui manquent depuis bientôt 200 ans, et qui jadis firent sa grandeur.
Kornog veut, en les faisant connaître, en les protégeant, rappeler à la vie l’art paysan, l’art populaire, bases de tout art national.
Kornog veut, détruisant la muraille qui bouche la vue dehors et qui s’appelle Paris et son emprise intellectuelle, faire entrer directement les jeunes artistes bretons, comme ceux d’un peuple libre, dans le grand mouvement d’échanges d’idées internationales, et leur faire connaître, sans passer par le filtre édulcorant de Paris, l’art des autres peuples.
Kornog veut révéler au public breton l’art de la Bretagne future, le lui faire comprendre, aimer et soutenir. Les conceptions artistiques que défendra Kornog seront furieusement modernes, car tout art qui ne crée plus est un art mort!
Kornog fera connaître aux jeunes artistes et musiciens bretons l’héritage des arts anciens d’Irlande et de Bretagne. Il sera le lien artistique entre Celtes.
La revue paraît pendant 2 ans puis s’éteint. Un autre périodique prendra la relève: Keltia.

Les vernophiles ont peut-être connaissance de cette collection d’enfantina, plus confidentielle que ses pendants les plus populaires : les incontournables Bibliothèques Rose, Verte ou Rouge & Or. Qui dit vernophile dit J. Hetzel, éditeur phare du XIXe siècle, aux magnifiques cartonnages rouges polychromes, évocateurs d’aventures inoubliables. Nous partageons avec vous l’histoire de cette collection méconnue et quelques-uns de ses spécimens, disponibles dans nos vitrines.
La Petite Bibliothèque Blanche
C’est en 1878 que Pierre-Jules Hetzel intègre la collection dans son catalogue, dans le but de concurrencer son rival de toujours : l’éditeur Louis Hachette, en particulier dans cette catégorie de livres pour enfants. La collection de Hetzel se veut supérieure à celle de son concurrent: des textes de qualité et une reliure de belle facture, le tout pour un prix équivalent ou moindre. Le livre d’étrennes par excellence. Hetzel réussit ce pari en piochant dans son catalogue des titres dont sa maison d’édition a acquis les droits, il en va de même pour les gravures. Ainsi près de la moitié des 24 titres publiés entre 1878 et 1881 sont issus de la précédente collection du « Magasin d’Éducation et de Récréation« . Il a aussi l’idée de vendre des droits de traduction sur certaines œuvres pour financer son projet. Malgré cette politique ambitieuse, les tirages ne cessent de baisser au fil des années, passant de 6000 à 2000 exemplaires en une décennie. Ce qui n’est pas pour déplaire au collectionneur d’enfantina.
Mais pourquoi « blanche », quand les couvertures que l’on a sous les yeux sont tout sauf… blanches?
Le titre de la collection fait en fait référence à la couleur blanche des ouvrages dans leur version brochée.
En 1914, lors du rachat de la maison J. Hetzel par Hachette à la mort de son fondateur, la Petite Bibliothèque Blanche deviendra littéralement blanche avec son cartonnage papier au décor floral.
Note particulière à l' »Histoire du Véritable Gribouille » de George Sand, dont voici la mention d’édition: « Paris, publié par E. Blanchard, ancienne librairie Hetzel, rue Richelieu, 78. 1851 ». Suite au coup d’état du 2 décembre 1851, P.-J. Hetzel est contraint de s’exiler pendant deux ans en Belgique. Il y continuera clandestinement sont travail d’éditeur. Par la suite, ce titre sera repris dans la Petite Bibliothèque Blanche.
Enfin, un petit mot pour nos vernophiles. Nous venons de recevoir notre catalogue dédié à George Roux, illustrateur de Jules Verne, édité par la Médiathèque de Sèvres. Et surprise, un de nos anciens exemplaires y figure : « L’épave du Cynthia » (1885) !
