Les amateurs d’arts plastiques sont à l’honneur cette semaine avec Abraxas ! Gros plan sur une artiste peu connue en Europe mais qui a marqué l’histoire de l’art brésilien et américain : Maria Martins. Nous la découvrons à travers ses « Statues magiques » * un ouvrage rare, présenté par messieurs André Breton et Michel Tapié.
Maria Carlos Martins Pereira de Souza, artiste avant-gardiste
De nationalité brésilienne, Maria de Lourdes Alves est née en 1894 à Capanha d’un père ministre et d’une mère pianiste. En 1926, elle prend le nom de son second mari et devient Maria Martins. En 1939, elle suit son époux ambassadeur aux États-Unis, à New York plus précisément. C’est dans cette ville que Maria Martins étudie les arts plastiques avec les sculpteurs Jacques Lipchitz et Stanley William Hayter. Deux ans plus tard, l’artiste expose pour la première fois son travail, sobrement intitulé « Maria », à la Galerie d’Art Corcoran de Washington. En 1943, la Galerie Valentine de New York, organise une double exposition, mettant en avant les travaux de Piet Mondrian et de Maria Martins. Cette dernière y fait d’ailleurs l’acquisition d’un des célèbres tableaux du peintre (« Broadway Boogie Woogie ») pour seulement 800$. Par la suite, elle fit don de l’œuvre au Musée d’Art Moderne.
Maria Martins a également eu une liaison avec le célèbre artiste Marcel Duchamp (inventeur du ready-made) ; elle dura de 1946 à 1954. En 2009, les membres de la famille de la sculptrice brésilienne publient la correspondance des deux amants qui confirme que Maria Martins a servi de modèle pour le dernier chef-d’œuvre de Duchamp, une installation « voyeuriste » intitulée « Étant donnés« . En 1951, Maria Martins retourne dans son Brésil natal où elle participe à la création de la toute première édition de la Biennale d’Art de Sao Paulo. Elle décède en mars 1973, à Rio de Janeiro et restera connue pour ses sculptures modernes.
Le point de vue de Breton et Tapié
Dons l’ouvrage, plusieurs textes « illustrent » les œuvres de Maria Martins. On trouve tour à tour des propos recueillis lors de l’exposition de l’artiste à la Julien Levy Gallery de New York en 1947, des analyses surréalistes et même l’intégralité du texte que Maria a gravé en français sur des plaques de cuivre, à l’occasion d’une exposition à New York en 1946. Le tout sous le prisme littéraire, artistique et surréaliste d’André Breton, de Michel Tapié et de l’artiste elle-même. Pour rappel, le premier était écrivain, poète et critique, un des pères du surréalisme. Le second était critique d’art et s’est également essayé aux arts visuels et à la musique. Deux figures françaises de l’art toutes désignées pour présenter l’œuvre de Maria Martins.
Encore une fois, cet ouvrage est d’une extrême rareté, son tirage étant limité à seulement 350 exemplaires, tous numérotés (ici le n°171). Nous vous laissons maintenant avec quelques extraits des « Statues magiques de Maria ».

0 Comments« La Nature », une revue de vulgarisation scientifique fondée en 1873
Nous souhaitons vous parler cette semaine d’un périodique mythique dans le monde des sciences : la revue « La Nature ». Créée par un amoureux des sciences naturelles et des techniques, « La Nature » avait pour but de mettre à la portée de tous les actualités scientifiques et autres inventions de l’époque. Découvrons ensemble les moments-clefs de son histoire et de celle de son fondateur.
La petite histoire de « La Nature »
C’est au milieu de l’année 1873 que paraît le premier numéro de « La Nature », aux éditions G. Masson. Son fondateur se nomme Gaston Tissandier, qui est un chimiste et également pionnier de l’aérostation. Son objectif est simple, il souhaite partager avec le plus grand nombre son intérêt pour les sciences et les inventions. Un engouement assez caractéristique de cette époque, d’ailleurs bien illustrée par le gouvernement alors en place. En effet, le Ministère de l’Instruction publique reconnaît dans « La Nature » une publication de qualité et souscrit un abonnement pour les bibliothèques scolaires et populaires. La revue paraît au début de sa vie chaque semaine jusqu’en 1926. A partir du 1er janvier 1927, elle change de périodicité en devenant bimensuelle puis mensuelle en 1948. Suite au décès de Gaston Tissandier, plusieurs rédacteurs en chef se succèdent, de Henri de Parville à Louis de Launay, en passant par Paul Ostoya. La revue changera de titre 3 fois :
– « La Nature Science Progrès » (1961)
– « Science Progrès La Nature » (1963)
– « Science Progrès Découverte (1969)
En 1972, « La Nature » fusionne avec le mensuel scientifique « La Recherche ».
Gaston Tissandier, digne descendant des Lumières
Ce français naît en 1943 à Paris, 4 ans après son frère Albert. Très vite intéressé par les sciences, il décide d’étudier la chimie au Conservatoire des arts et métiers et se spécialise dans l’étude des gaz. Il poursuit ensuite une carrière d’enseignant-chercheur, au travers de diverses sociétés savantes (Société polymathique notamment). Curieux comme un enfant, il aime par-dessus tout partager ses connaissances, découvertes et observations avec les petits et les grands, ce qui le place dans la lignée humaniste des Lumières.
Gaston Tissandier a également une passion, en relation avec sa vocation scientifique : l’aéronautique. S’intéressant de près à la météorologie et aux phénomènes atmosphériques, il n’aura de cesse, à l’aide de son frère Albert, de repousser le progrès dans le domaine de l’aérostation. Lors du siège de Paris, ses récentes avancées permettront notamment l’observation des champs de bataille. Il accomplira par la suite d’autres exploits inédits dans le domaine de l’aérostation, en battant par exemple le record de durée de vol les 23 et 24 mars 1875 (22h40 à bord du ballon le Zénith).
Outre ses épopées aéronautiques, Gaston Tissandier restera un grand aventurier des sciences et du progrès. Il n’aura de cesse d’écrire et de publier des ouvrages de vulgarisation scientifique, et se verra d’ailleurs décerner de nombreux prix, dont la Légion d’honneur. Humaniste avant tout, il aura su insuffler dans « La Nature », la joie du partage des connaissances et de l’éveil au savoir scientifique.
